She has worked in over 30 countries and typically operates as lead camera in small crews. She was one of the founding members of VICE News and served as a “producer/shooter” for many years before specializing as a cinematographer. She is highly skilled at responding fluidly and creatively in unpredictable environments and prioritizes narrative honesty, landing at a style best described as polished verité. She has taught journalism courses at the UBC School of Journalism and the University of King’s College, and taught master classes in shooting/producing at various universities including CUNY, Columbia University and her alma mater NYU Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. She also teaches filmmaking to kids, with a focus on the practical elements of production and working as a team. Prior to her documentary work, Claire was an editor and writer for Maclean’s magazine and learned the ropes as a fact-checker for The Walrus and Maisonneuve magazines.
